New RUS Specs Fully Approve 10-mil Coating On UL-Listed Copper-Covered Ground Rods

No longer "conditional", the latest USDA List of Materials document for rural utilities shows UL-Listed copper-coated ground rods with 10-mils of copper plating as fully accepted for the RUS market. UL-Listed 10-mil sectional ground rods in 8 and 10-foot lengths are also fully accepted under the new document.

This provides an opportunity to realize cost savings for both end-users and distributors. Utility end-users will no longer be compelled to pay more for thicker copper coating. Distributors who have carried 10-mil copper-coated ground rods for the C/I market and 13-mil rods for the utility market can now stock the UL-Listed 10 mil rods for both.

The April 2015 update of RUS Informational Publication 202-1 eliminates the “Conditional” listing 10-mil copper coated rods. (Download document now directly from RUS website.) (Download ground rod pages only.) As a result, Galvan products are now approved in seven different ground rod categories, including:

10-mil copper-covered ground rods, 8' length, 5/8" and 3/4" diameter
sectional 10-mil copper-covered ground rods, 8' and 10' long, 5/8" diameter, plus couplings and drive studs
13-mil copper-covered ground rods, 8' length, 5/8" and 3/4" diameter
hot-dip galvanized ground rods, 8' length, 5/8" and 3/4" diameter
hot-dip galvanized pigtail ground rods, 8' length, 5/8" and 3/4" diameter
sectional hot-dip galvanized ground rods, 8' and 10' lengths, 5/8" diameter, plus couplings
sectional 13-mil copper-covered ground rods, 8' and 10' lengths, 5/8" diameter, plus couplings

Galvan ground rods feature a uniform coating of copper or zinc over a rigid cold-drawn steel core. The ends are pointed and chamfered for easier driving without mushrooming. Each rod is clearly and permanently marked, identifying the manufacturer and displaying the listing symbol.

The company's state-of-the-art galvanizing operation and patented copper plating process (US Patent #6,527,934) both operate within highly-efficient closed loop systems that release no chemical wastes into the environment. This makes Galvan's ground rods a viable choice for environmentally conscious installers and end users.

All Galvan ground rods are made in the USA. They are used in residential, commercial, industrial and utility applications, including construction, cable TV, lightning protection, telecommunications and power transmission.

In addition to copper coated and hot-dip galvanized rods, Galvan also manufacturers listed stainless steel and solid copper ground rods.
